Shortly after 8:30 a.m. on Thursday morning, DC Fire and EMS personnel were called to the 1200 block of M Street NW, where there was a reported fire in a unit that rapidly spread.
Upon arrival, firefighters were met by flames coming from the eighth floor of the nine-story building, and once inside, they found a resident who was later pronounced dead.
While crews were still at the scene, a second alarm was called due to the smoke and fire conditions. Several residents in the building were also evacuated on Thursday morning.
A firefighter and at least two others were evaluated at the scene and taken to area hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The two-alarm fire led to several road closures in the area to allow crews to knock down the flames. The fire was declared under control before 10 a.m. on March 28.
No information about the victim has been provided by the department.
